Did Europe become very left-wing as a result of a backlash against the rise of far-right Nazi extremism?

The Nazi's under hitler were far right. They were used by the German capitalist class to smash working class militancy. Industrialists like Thysson funded the nazi's to smash the socialists, communists, and trade unionists that were gaining influence amongst the german working classes.

Ford and General Motors, built many of their tanks for massive profit. IBM supplied them with the punch card machines that made the holocaust possible. And Coke kept the german people's thirst quenched with Fanta.

Prior to the rise of hitler to the helm of the party, like many fascist parties, the party borrowed some of its ideology from the left and wedded it with extreme right wing nationalism. These were mainly under a faction of the party run by the Strasser brothers, and the 'leftism' of these was distorted and mainly directed at what they saw as a conspiracy of Jewish financial and corporate interests. This faction was wiped out in the 'Night of the Long Knives' When hitler gained power in 1933, who were the first victims.

It wasn't the Jews or the Slavs but rather the communists. Socialists, and trade unionists, who posed a threat to the regime. The Nazi party never had a foothold in the organised working classes, it drew its support from elements of the capitalist elite, the petty bourgiousie who really felt the pain of the depression, and the unorganised elements of the the working classes, the lumpenprolitariat, who did not the strength of collective action to protect their interests.

As far as the party being named the National Socialist German Workers Party, I have a question for people who say this is proof of its socialism. Is New England part of England, or is the People's Democratic Republic of Korea (north korea) democratic?

I'm a Fascist and would like add something: Fascism is not suitable for the left/right scale, it is more appropriate to think of it as a horseshoe. The reason why some say Nazi's were socialist is because they were called the 'National Socialist Workers Party', both Hitler and Mussolini played with socialism in their lives. HOWEVER, both were of a unique kind of economic and social position called corporatism, which is the more appropriate word for Fascism.

Regardless of what you may hear there was no definite social hierarchy in the corporate system, all countrymen are equal and fundamental to the National Corpus (body), there is only one class of people: Germans (or whichever country you are a member of). Fascists are not anti-union, they are the workers, the people, and give unions a chance in government so they can make a real difference. I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
