Given than miracles have been performed by more than Christ alone (such as Moses, Jesus' disciples, etc) "who" the Messiah was, if based on that alone, would be confusing. We can see through further study that the ability to perform miracles is not the Scriptural test for the Messiah. Even Jesus only had his mothers' word for who he was.
He turned to scripture like everyone else. What he learned there included the prophecies about the Lamb of God, Son of David and the rest. He was able to trace his lineage back through scripture to Adam (as we can also determine about m) and see that He was the fulfillment of prophecy. As for who is THE messiah, there can be only one so the test has to be specific.
Basing my study on miracles alone would not isolate Jesus in any way so I don't believe it's a sound test. As with any scriptural question we have to look at the whole Bible in context and not be quick to rule out what doesn't seem to make sense the first time through. But I see that your question seems more concerned about the reality of this person we call Jesus not just his credentials.
I've never doubted in Jesus' existence. But the only way I can know He is the one is by doing the math as shown in the Bible. If not for the Bible we would have no basis to assume that ANYONE is the Messiah of anything so whether or not someone named Jesus ever existed wouldn't be an issue at all.
Again if we rule out the Bible as a reliable source, any other books that refer to a messiah would have to be assessed on their own content. As to whether or not I can trust that information, well, my basis for true writings is based on source, consistency and content. Stephen King writes a good book, but I don't use his stories about a Messiah to determine real life Truth's.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
