It's happened to me. I immediately took the boss aside and requested they speak to me professionally and privately. It worked.
I garnered more respect from that incident because the people observed me handling the situation coolly, unlike the boss. The boss apologized and never did it again. A few months later, another boss ran up hooting and hollering and I just laughed and walked away.
When he asked me what I was doing, I said, "The way you were conducting yourself, I thought you were joking! " Remember, a title is not indicative of who you are. Your actions are.
Sucky job story to rule them all I had a boss that not only screamed at people in front of other workers (and customers), he would call customers and tell them how stupid his employees were (within hearing of said employees)--any decision made with him not there, he would undo. "She doesn’t know what she’s talking about, don’t listen to her. If I’m not here call back later.
" Or worse--add in a few choice swears. He didn’t understand that this doesn’t inspire confidence in his customers--why would you buy from a guy who knowingly hires a bunch of clueless idiots to work for him? He also threw things and broke things.
He had no impulse control, VERY immature. It all came to a head when I went on a (planned) vacation. When I came back, the sales manager had placed a huge order in my absence for something in my product line, only he didn’t follow procedure and get the correct pricing up front, and our company lost $10,000 on the job.
I probably could have talked the vendor into giving us the lower pricing, but I didn’t get the chance to even try. My boss basically detonated and blamed ME for the $10,000 error BECAUSE I WASN’T THERE TO PLACE THE ORDER. (Remember, I’m the stupid one no one should ever talk to because I don’t know anything.
) I walked to my desk and without a word started packing up my personal things as he ranted, raved and screamed. When he realized what I was doing, he hit me, grabbed me (I had bruises) and bodily ejected me from the building. I had to return with a police officer to get my things.
He wouldn’t let me in AND threatened my with bodily harm IN FRONT OF THE COP. Yes, this company is still in business, believe it or not. There is nothing you can do except bear it or get out.
I advise getting out. I worked there six years, about four years too long.
I sat down with him behind closed doors and told him that I would appreciate not being yelled at in public. He was surprised, since no one had ever said anything about it to him before. He promised to do better in the future.
Unfortunately, old habits die hard. He was back to his old ways a week later. I said nothing and started looking for another job.
He was surprised when I quit. That's just poor management practices and even worse leadership. When I was in the Air Force I had to take a class called Airman Leadership School. It 8 weeks long and 8 hours a day 5 days a week.
Needless to say it was very indepth. Anyway, while in class we were taught how to be good, fair managers, good leaders, how to write performance reports and several other things. One thing that they harped on was "reprimand in private, praise in public".
I have never been publically reprimanded and hope that I never am. However, I have seen some people get reprimanded in public and I can say it's never a good idea. That ends up leading to a MASSIVE drop in moral not only for that person, but for everyone that whitnesses it.
The person getting reprimanded ends up embarrassed and ashamed. This leads them to have even less respect for their manager, and it just snowballs from there. In fact it's usually the exact opposite reaction that the manager was going for.
I can think of one alternative. Is it possible to transfer outside this managers relm of control? Maybe to a different team or different building?
If the person doesn't like the job, compnay or whatever, then what can it hurt to look for another position. However, if this is an isolated incident I would look for a different team or manager. Sources: Me.
1 Moypheus, regarding your answer "It's happened to me. I immediately took the boss aside and requested they speak to me professionally and privately. ":I DID take the boss aside (that's what the books say you should do).
The boss said I was too sensitive. I think this boss did her public reprimands because SHE felt it made her look good (and, maybe, she was mental).

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
