I just read that plastic has toxic components that can leach into the water that it is holding. Should I replace the water pitchers that I use every day in my refrigerator? I also use the same water bottle and refill.

Don't toss your plastics just yet (read more) I too had heard something about toxic and cancer-causing components supposedly found in plastic water bottles. So I headed over to Snopes. Com and UrbanLegends.Com because this just seemed too improbably to even be partly true.

What I found at Snopes. Com was: snopes.com/medical/toxins/petbottles.asp The first scarelore of this type began when a Univ of Idaho student was doing his master’s thesis. There were no scientific studies that the student cited, but now experts (scientists) have concluded that there is no merit to this claim.

It should not worry you, if you take the proper precautions. Not all plastic is the same. The FDA has rated certain plastic as safe for everyday and prolonged use.

All plastics leach chemicals to some degree. There are toxic chemicals everywhere. The key is to keep the amount of these chemicals below toxic levels.

The plastic that the FDA has approved leaches chemicals well below the toxic limit for all known dangerous chemicals. The type of plastic used in the bottles is usually stamped into the bottom of the bottle as a number. Numbers 2, 4, and 5 are the safest, and appropriate for long term storage and reuse.

Number 1 plastic is fine for one time use, but probably should not be reused. There are popular and colorful bottles made out of Lexan with a number 7 stamped on the bottom. Those are not the safest for water storage.

The FDA is watching out for you I'm not sure why this particular meme has such long legs. The FDA tests food-grade plastics precisely to ensure that there are no harmful chemicals leaching out of them. There is no conspiracy to slowly poison you.

Refutations of this particular meme are all over the web. Here's one from Johns Hopkins, for example. It's very easy to scare people with stories of slow poisoning, because they can't see it.

And people seem to have a fondness for spreading the stories, no matter how many times they're refuted. Your plastic water pitchers are just fine.

The typical person puts several million times more glop in their body than can ever leach out of any plastic. Soudium lauryl sulfate, BHA, BHT, brominated vegetable oil, ester of wood rosin, polysorbate 60, red dye #2, ethylene glycol, MSG, disodium isonate, disodium guinalate, .. And that's just the ingredients in my pretzels.

The softer plastics are not good and you can taste plastic in the water. I do use the harder plastic for my water... I buy.. I drink it so fast that I don't think it is a problem for me right now.
