Songwriters don't always want the credit--they're listed as the writer or composer by licensing/royalty clearinghouses like ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers) or BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc. )--they want the royalties. "ASCAP licenses the right to perform songs and musical works created and owned by the songwriters, composers, lyricists and music publishers who are ASCAP members and also those members of foreign performing rights organizations who are represented by ASCAP in the United States." "Broadcast Music, Inc.
Collects license fees from businesses that use music, which it distributes as royalties to songwriters, composers & music publishers. " Barry Manilow is behind so many jingles. He even worked into his stage act at one point--he called it his "VSM," or Very Strange Medley.
It was basically an overview of what he'd been involved in to that point. I've heard the audio of this a million times--my mother went to Brooklyn Collrge when he did and she's a huge fan. I think it was on one of his cassettes that she played nonstop.
I could probably sing it in my sleep. I didn't realize this exact version was from 1976--right now is the first time I've ever seen the video for it. I don't know if he still does it at his show in Vegas.
There were other versions of it on youtube but this is the one I've always heard. KFC ("Have a Barrel of fun..."McDonald's (You Deserve a break today..."), Stridex (Give your face something to smile about..."), State Farm Insurance ("Like a good Neighbor..."), Band-Aid ("I am Stuck on Band-Aid)..Dr. Pepper (It's the most original soft drink in the whole wide world"), Pepsi ("Join the Pepsi Fever..."and more. Says wikipedia: Manilow also worked as a commercial jingle writer/singer,13 an activity that continued well into the 1970s.
He penned many of the jingles that he performed, including those for Bowlene Toilet Cleaner, State Farm Insurance ("Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there..."), Stridex acne cleanser, and Band-Aid ("I am stuck on Band-Aid, 'cause Band-Aid's stuck on me! " sung by a jubilant struggling actor named John Travolta), among others. S singing-only credits include Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pepsi, Jack in the Box, Dr Pepper, and the famed McDonald's "You Deserve a Break Today" campaign.
14 Manilow won two Clio Awards in 1976 for his work for Tab and Band-Aid.15" And yes, he's in The Songwriters Hall of Fame: It says that he himself, on his own albums, has had "38 Top 40 In addition to his own recordings, every album he has produced for other artists has been nominated for Grammy Awards, including Bette Midler, Nancy Wilson, and Dionne Warwick. " I knew he wrote for Bette--he started his career with her in the '70s, and I knew he wrote for Dionne. http://www.songwritershalloffame.org/exhibits/C168 All of the ones you listed--Simon, Collins, EWF, Cohen--all rightfully deserve a place in there, too.
Manilow got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame right at the height of the first wave of his career, in 1980.
They don't get enough credit in my book. I'm glad there is a songwriters hall of fame and my all time favorite songwriter is in it - Kris Kristofferson. He wrote a lot of western hits for himself and a lot of the biggies including Johnny Cash.
He also wrote the song Me and Bobby McGee, made famous by Janis Joplin. S lyrics really set him apart in the world of western music and easily translated to other genres. Just brilliant.
Cash called it "The best anti-drug song I ever heard. " Trent Reznor on Johnny Cash's "Hurt" "By the end I was really on the verge of tears. At the end of it, there was just dead silence.
There was, like, this moist clearing of our throats and then, 'Uh, okay, let's get some coffee.
I agree that song writer's rarely get enough credit. Many popular artists today don't even write the songs they are famous for and you never even hear the name of the real writer, animated films is another area song writers rarely get the attention they deserve. A hall of fame sounds like an excellent idea to both draw attention to this field of work and offer better recognition for writers.
Though my favorite song writer gets plenty of recognition, Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails is by far my favorite. From what I can find, he is not in the Hall of Fame no. A great example: youtube.com/watch?v=o22eIJDtKho Nine Inch Nails Hurt|Hurt first performed and written by Trent, here performed by Johnny Cash shortly before his death.
Songwriters usually do not get any credit at all-unless they are the lead singer of the band. Take for instance Taylor Swift or Blink-182... how about Green Day? They all wrote their own songs(for the most part).
I recently heard an interview on the Christian Radio of a man who had written radio hit songs for artists such as Toby-Mac, Lifehouse, Red, Disciple, Third-Day and others; I had never even heard his name before.
Every time a song is played on the radio the song writer gets money in the bank. Or if that song is played on TV, big event, etc. While money isn't everything, they do get recognition by recording artist which keeps bread on the table.''Whitney Houston'' sang ''Dolly Parton's'' song, "I will always love you" and Dolly took off with 2 million happy as a clam.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
