I don't know anyone who has completely repatriated. Two of my graduate advisors were West African (Nigeria and Sierra Leone). Both keep an active presence in their birth countries, doing what they can to improve conditions there as well as relationships between the U.S. and their countries.
They speak of government corruption as a fact of life with which they work, but are not personally subject to it. As to the romanticization of the diaspora, I know few who see Africa in that light. It's huge, it has problems related to colonialism in many areas, and there are often areas subject to violence and starvation.
There are also rich and interesting cultures - all conditions frequently encountered in less developed areas of the world.
.I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
