We ask, we answer, we discuss, we chat...we get silly, we care, we share...we help... I sure don't think it's a major waste of time. No more than going to a movie, watching TV or playing a video game. More productive than gossiping with the neighbors...and nobody gets hurt.

It's communicating with tons of friends, we don't have to serve coffee and cookies...it's relaxing, it's entertaining, it's educational...and if you're not in the mood to be social...then we just don't sign in. I suppose Askville is sort of an addiction for me...but, while my washer is washing, and my dryer is drying...the dishwasher is running...and my Roomba is vacuuming, I can take a little break, smile, laugh or brighten someone elses day...and get back to work. I do mostly for questions and research Dating type chat is very common. I feel this is safer than going to a party or a bar. You protected by your computer screen.

Yes, I chat on the internet - I belong to a forum with a chat room and several different areas for different topics - blowing off steam, bragging, crying, and just chatter. We are a family. We share joys and sorrows, brag about our kids, share tips on menus and cleaning, talk about free stuff we get ( and there is a LOT of free stuff and money to be made taking surveys).

We send flowers and cards to each other. As for it being a waste of time - I made almost $3000 last year from surveys my chat family told me about. If you have an addictive personality, I can see you becoming addicted.

Yes, and I don't think there's anything negative about it. It's just a way of talking to people, like using the phone or hanging out around the water cooler. If you spend all your time chatting to the exclusion of other important things, that's a problem, but the same is true if you're spending all your time on the phone or drinking water instead of working.

There's nothing about talking that makes it any more addictive than any other activity, and nothing about the internet that makes talking online more addictive than any other kind of talking. I'm curious about how you managed to get caught in its "snare", actually. Who were you chatting to, and how often, and why couldn't you stop?

Not since AOL ...which I used to joke stood for "all obey lucifer". The internet is a wonderful tool for research and shopping, but people shouldn't be allowed to talk to each other on it. Anonymity + no consequences = potential mayhem I know several people who have had marriages ruined over it.

It is addicting, and people in chatrooms and private chat can get totally psychotic. I think the whole thing has been a great psych experiment; one which demonstrates how horrible people can be under the right (or wrong) circumstances and how much damage they can do with simple text. We should export AOL to our enemies.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
