Midnight Mass Going to Midnight Mass was the tradition in my family. Incense, sleeping children and singing Christmas themed music. There was a ceremony where they brought in a baby Jesus statue for the Nativity scene, and someone would sing "Fall on Your Knees".

We had a professional opera singer in our church who would often sing this and it would give you chills every single time. I still think of incense and that song whenever I think about Christmas eve. When I was a kid, this was usually that latest we were ever allowed to say up at night, often getting home at 1am or 1:30.

How I Spend my Christmas Eve This is kind of silly, but the child in me believes in the legend that animals can talk on Christmas Eve. The legend seems to originate from old European superstition, but I don’t remember when and how I first became aware of it. I always stay up until after midnight on Christmas Eve to be with my animals "just in case.

" So far no one’s talked. I ask them questions and tell them this is their big chance and try to encourage them, but so far no luck. Isn’t that weird?

They look at me like I’m nuts and go back to sleep. Some of the legends say that humans can’t hear them talk, but I don’t see much evidence that they’re even talking to each other. Other legends say you have to have a pure heart in order to be able to hear them.

If so, evidently I don’t qualify. But even though my family thinks I’m nuts, every year something in me tells me this just might be the year...

Our "Tradition" My husband and I have been married for two great years. Our first Christmas cam just a few months after we got married, and I got all excited since our dinky little apartment was decorated with our minimal holiday decorations. I love the way the tree looked all lit up with the lights off and hated having to turn the lights off and go to bed in a different room.

So, on Christmas Eve my wonderful husband dragged our mattress out of our bedroom and set it on the floor in the living room by the tree so we could sleep out by the tree all night with the Christmas lights on! It was so fun, we do it every year now. I can't wait till we have kids and they get to sleep out by the tree as well!

Midnight for us on Christmas Eve is spent at Midnight Mass. I have always loved Midnight Mass and look forward to it every year. It is a Mass of celebration as we welcome Christ the King and it is one of the most festive and upbeat Masses of the year.

I belong to a small Parish and we don’t always use all of the bells and whistles but on this night we do. As we have grown older and our Christmas schedules change with the loss of some family members and the adding of in-laws this is one thing that has remained constant. I can almost smell the frankincense now.

Midnight on Christmas Eve We go to midnight mass on Christmas Eve every year. It's really nice and when we come home we all have a drink of milk and a cookie before we go to bed.
