Do you donate money to any causes, such as Save the Whales, UNICEF, The United Way or your church?

I used to tithe to my local church, but not anymore. I don't mean to make a religious debate out of this, as I know many people believe that the Bible says to tithe, but my church simply didn't do a good enough job accounting for why each dollar deserved to go where it was going. I expect people and businesses that I associate with to squeeze as much out of every dollar as they can.My church didn't have the same "squeezing" mentality that I do.

They would make slideshows to talk about all the good they were doing. However, they never showed me the opportunities they decided not to "invest" in. I'd like to see a church come up with five ways to spend some money, then eliminate four of them and state why the one idea they're going with is superior to all the others.

The administration had trouble criticizing the ineffective opportunities, so they themselves also became somewhat ineffective. Christians sometimes have trouble being critical and negative, but when an opportunity sucks you're morally obligated to come down *hard* on it. I believe in charity, but from here on out I'm going to remain in control.

I don't donate more than $5 or $10 now until I start seeing spreadsheets.

Yes Saint Joseph's Indian School in Chamberlain, SD. I also donate to different charities throughout the year that come up.

We donate to some animal rescues, including a collie rescue organization where we got our two collies (who have since passed on after 10 and 12 years, respectively). We also donate household goods to a veteran's organization. Plus we will help friends and family throughout the year that are collecting money for their usual schools or charities.

Finally, we do yearly memberships to the local zoo and aquarium which also helps them. Other than that, I'm sure we hit some other charities throughout the year, especially at Christmas time.

A part of each of my paychecks goes to The United Way. It's not a huge amount, but it's what I can afford. I tend to donate a little bit more to charities around the holidays, and I give to friends who are doing marathons and things, like the Walk for the Cure.

I volunteer as well (about 20 hours per month, in all), but I volunteer with an organization that frankly acts like it would rather have my cash. Oh well...

I give to the Humane Society and occasionally to other animal rescue sites. I figure that humans usually can find some way to help themselves, whereas dogs and cats do not have any way to help themselves. There is so much mistreatment of pets that it is so sad.

I donated to WWF through a monthly donation subscription a while ago, but I don't know why it's been stopped. If I have the chance again and I am in better financial condition in few months, I will donate again via Mahalo. I used to give 10% of my earnings to the church when I was a Christian.

Since I don't support Christianity anymore, I stop doing that. They accumulate too much money but only do scat to help other people. I prefer to donate to organizations that directly help other people or wildlife instead of just claiming to do but only serve to enrich themselves.

The Committee to Protect Journalists defends press freedom and the rights of journalists to report the news world-wide without fear of harm.MAPLight.org provides tools and data to investigate the influence of money and politics. The Sunlight Foundation focuses on using technology to make government more transparent and accountable. I don’t think I’ve mentioned my Mom’s charity on my blog before, but I did donate money this year to it, so it seems appropriate to mention it.

Blessing Hands provides scholarships and other help to students in China. Side-note: in the same way that I don’t accept gifts or free things, if you ever decide to donate any money to Blessing Hands, please don’t tell me; I wouldn’t want a donation to create the appearance of any conflict of interest with my job. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) defends everyone’s digital and online rights.

The EFF has stopped more bad ideas online than I can even count. Those were the organizations that I ended up giving some money to. Now it’s your turn.

What charities would you like to mention, support, or call out? By the way, I’d still like to find 501(c)(3) organizations with low overhead costs that support open-source software. And I’d still like to find an organization that teaches the basics of journalism online for free.

The training could cover the history of journalism, research and fact checking, ethics, legal principles, rights, how to investigate, libel and slander, off the record vs. on background, and so on.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
