I heard on a local news program that there has been a rise in cavities due to the preference for bottled water over the fluoridated tap water. Asked by AgentOrange 55 months ago Similar questions: drink tap water bottled Health.

Most bottled water is purified tap water... I have always drunk tap water (other than the convenience of having a bottle for a day hiking). Gov't regs keep tap water safe and clean. I've even seen studies in my local area, where Boston tap water outperformed half the bottled waters tested and was well within the "safe" range for various chemicals.
The house I'm in currently, however, has a very slight funny taste. I only notice it in direct comparison to bottled, but it is there. So, I've switched to one of those filter pitchers and the taste is now fine!
An interesting side note. Most (or at least many) bottled waters are actually from municiple sources. Check out the label, the next time you drop $1 for a plastic bottle.
I'd be curious to know how much additional filtration they do. My favorite bottled water...deep ocean water (I saw it in Hawaii). The claim is, they bring water up from super deep trenches, off the hawaiian islands.
They remove some of the salt, but leave in all the other healty minerals. They sell it for upwards of $3 for a 12 oz bottle and the Japanese tourists were buying them like crazy. They even had a "Deep Water Bar" in one mall..
Our tap water tastes awful so I always drink Dasani bottled water. I work really hard to drink water and not Coke, which would cause infinitely more cavities than drinking bottled water and I like the taste of Dasani. Our tap water is just nasty tasting and I do well to convince myself to cook with the stuff.

Oh good I feel better now! I always use the tap water to make my juices, coffee, and tea. I often wonder if I should be using bottled water for purification reasons.
I have also heard abuot the fluoride in the tape water but never really gave it much thought about the fluoride, could that be the reason my kids have no cavities, I thought it was because I made them floss, well whatever the reason I will continue to drink my tap water because it has not killed me yet and its free! Neither - Reverse Osmosis water So that would be somewhere in between tap and bottled water. No, I don't get the fluoride in my water, but I also don't get the arsenic (did I mention I'm on well water? That might've helped).
After several years of drinking this water exclusively, neithermy husband or I have had any cavity problems. But for anyone who is concerned, you can always consult your dentist and he/she may recommend special fluoride treatments for anyone not drinking city water regularly. Again though, for me it's not a huge concern.
And I've never heard any studies pointing to higher rates of cavities in rural areas with well water as opposed to urban areas with city-enhanced water. I drink both, depending on where I am. At home, I drink tap water, as we are on a well and the water is tasty. My children had to take flouride tablets when they were little, though, because our well water is obviously not treated with flouride.
Elsewhere I drink bottled water, 'cause I like to think that it is more pure than most tap water. Moreover, it tastes better than most tap water! It surprises me, though, that there has been a rise in cavitites, given that there are sealants available now that coat and protect young teeth against decay.
I'd be curious to know if the higher incidence of cavities is in children or adults. Rickisgirl's Recommendations Polar 20 or 24 oz.
