Actually, no. Cosmetics are man made, which by definition mean that they are composed of many chemicals for us to get the results that we want. The chemical names on the ingredient list are usually the chemical names for common ingredients.
If it bothers you (and I can see why it would), look up each chemical to see what the purpose is as well as the common name. Sources: Degree in Chemistry .
Because American consumers don't care and trust corporations Keep in mind that many of these nasty chemicals aren't in the same products in Europe. For some reason Europeans are smarter than we are about this, or at least less likely to trust corporations to protect them. Of course, many American's also think that the government is protecting them.
And yes, many of these chemicals are dangerous. But the reason they are there is simple. In one way or the other they make the product cheaper or easier to URL1 may be that they make the product more consistant (god knows no one wants to have to shake something first) or that they extend shelf life.
An example of this would be parabens (methyl, butyl etc). They increase shelf life (and give people skin issues) and they are so much cheaper than Vit E and C and other natural ingredients that do the same thing. Most of them are preservatives. Most of them are preservatives, and if they didn't have them everything would have to be kept in the refrigerator in order to keep them from going bad. As it is, cosmetics aren't supposed to be used after three months, can you imagine how fast they'd go bad if you had to keep them in the fridge all the time!?
It doesn't make sense why some shampoos and conditioners have coloring in them, except they want the product to look like it smells (i.e. Strawberry shampoo is pink)..
