Ever since I learned that Woody Allen does not attend the Oscars, giving the excuse that he has to play in his jazz group that night (which he does), I rarely tune in. It's turned into a spectacle of self-congratulatory indulgence. It's all part of the hollywood machine. To get your movie nominated means more DVD sales.
To be the best director means you get to be more choosy with your projects. To be the best actor means your agent is going to get that much millions more dollars for your next gig. It's political, how many academy member's palms can you grease before Oscar night. How much money can you pump into full page color adds that state "For Your Consideration, Best Picture, Best Director, etc," for weeks on end in industry rags like Variety.
It's only televised because the stars have to show up. The show's producers, for good reason, have the technical awards for advances in film science the day before or way earlier than prime time and it has never been televised. And then the judging is so inherently subjective.
Who are they to say who the best is in any given performance. Paul Newman got routinely screwed throughout his career with a consolation prize for The Color of Money with Tom Cruise. I mean come on.
Sean Penn said in his 2004 acceptance speech "in acting, there's no such thing as best." I would agree, and also that was the year Bill Murray got screwed. Sean Penn Oscar 2004 - Click here for more home videos http://www.metacafe.com/watch/2849693/sean_penn_oscar_2004.
Well of course they are. Can you even begin to imagine a bunch of actors congratulating themselves on how good they are with ending up exactly like the Oscars? Did you not have a theater club in your high school or theater arts students at college?
Are they not always the flamboyant, showy, pretentious over the top individuals? That's what makes them good at what they do. Each one of them is used to being the center of attention everywhere they go, and now here they are, all in one place, each one competing for all they are worth to try and be the center of attention. No shrinking violets allowed!
Why do you think they all believe they are experts on politics, the environment, religion, medicine, etc? They simply can't imagine a world or a conversation where they are not the center of the universe! It's part of their actor's gene. I wouldn't have it any other way, would you?
The perfect Oscar song youtube.com/watch?v=IJGXNYh5JOA.
It is an over the top party for insecure people to pat themselves on the back. Who cares I don't even know who half the actors are. When I watch a movie I watch it for it's content and can get to the end and not know who was in it as I don't watch the credits.
They also never have a theme of contribution to help someone in need.
I totally agree that the Oscars are a waste of time and money. Who cares who wears what, the acceptance speeches, all the stupid jokes.. well, unfortunately a lot of people want to know and enjoy the show. Searches for the Oscars are already climbing and it isn't even until Sunday. So there must be more people that care about the Oscars than people like me who could care less.
:-).
I would agree, they are entirely pointless, spend way to much money and are in my opinion boring. Film festivals celebrating truly excellent films are worth something, the Oscars actually from what I've seen reward mainstream movies and give celebrities a chance to dress up and blow tons of cash. I find them neither entertaining nor useful.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
