Funny that this question comes up; I was speaking about this very issue last night with my room mate. We live in a house that is about 65 years old and we have a ghost. It started with odd noises, doors opening, things moving on their own, Etc.
Then, I had a friend over who claims he saw an old man out of the corner of his eye on the back porch who then disappeared. He looked at me and said,"I thing I just saw a ghost," he had no prior knowledge of our ghost theory.
To this day we still her him at night. If I am up late doing anything he will be in the kitchen banging pans almost every time. We are not afraid of him but it can get pretty loud sometimes.
It's not old fashion, but when I was younger (sigh) I had quite a few experiences with ghosts. One that stands out as the scariest thing that ever happened was I was up late one night watching a movie with my mom. When it was over I went upstairs to bed.
Now, mind you, I was always sure that something was UNDER my bed so I always used to stand in my doorway and turn the light off, then soar through the air into my bed and hurry under the covers. This one particular night I was more than uncomfortable and scootched the covers from over my eyes and in the darkened doorway there was what I can only describe as a shadow figure that filled almost the entire doorframe. "mom?"
I asked in a shaky voice. The thing didn't move. "mom?"
I asked again. It laughed a deep, throaty laugh. Under the covers I flew and remained there for the rest of the night.
The next morning I asked my mom about it and she said it was her. Years later I learned that she never would have done that to me. Besides, my mom only stands about 5 feet tall, this thing filled the doorway.
True story...and believe me, I was terrified. I still can see the thing as clear as day in my mind's eye.
Well this one might not be as interesting but it's old fashioned. Actually it's pretty old. My grandma would tell me this tale when I was just a small kid.
Years later (she died few years ago) my mom recalled how her mom (my grandma) had told her the same story.
The story is of my grandma's dad who was a doctor in rural India. One day after visiting an old patient of his in some remote place, he was driving back. Normally it would take him about two hours to travel back on the same road but somehow the road kept going on.
He was bit worried as it was getting dark and he felt he might have take a wrong turn. But after he noticed that he had crossed by the same big banyan tree for the fifth time, he grew worried.
He decided that he would take the straight road and go where ever it takes without taking a left turn. Half an hour on the straight road his car stops near the same tree again. He accelerates his car and repeating the names of Gods, I finally manages to escape.
My grandma promised me that it was a true story. I have my doubts. But as a kid I was spooked for days.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
