"The fault for this lies with a piece of legislation called the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA), which seized back control of patent medicines from the FDA. Driven by strenuous lobbying from supplement manufacturers, this legislation removed all herbs, vitamins, and minerals from FDA oversight — despite the fact that herbs are drugs, exhibiting a full range of effectiveness (or ineffectiveness), dangerous side effects, and interactions with other drugs. Not only are the producers of herbal drugs and other supplements no longer required to prove that their products work — or whether they are safe — but the burden of proof regarding safety is explicitly shifted to the FDA.
That is, anyone can sell any old combination of herbs at any dosage, without any obligation to even try to find out if that product is safe or not." Ahh, the Food and Drug Administration I use many different supplements, but mostly supps that have proven safe over a period of time. I don’t use any of these miracle cure type supplements, and rarely recommend them. The weight loss craze exploded with all of these ridiculous formulations of things that did nothing, but claiming to do everything. In 2006, the Federal Trade Commission fined a few of these companies a total of 25 million dollars for false or exagerated claims.
The FDA did nothing! Companies that make "performance enhancing supplements" are no longer allowed to use the terms anabolic or prohormone. Some companies still claim that their products are "better than steroids", but that’s absurd.
They aren’t claiming to treat, diagnose or cure any disease, so the FDA allows them to make these claims. One of the most effective supplements to come along in years was just banned by the FDA, following the banning of androstenedione and nor-andro. I studied Chinese herbology during the seven years that I trained martial arts.
Some of these things are in fact effective, and safe when used properly. They haven’t gone trough the same clinical testing, double blind or controlled testing that drugs have, so safe? Honestly, all I use now are things like protein and glucosamine sulfate, with just a few others.
I’m not satisfied that most of these things are potent, actuaaly contain what they say (Gaspri’s Halodrol-50 contained Madol (desoxymethyltestosterone ). http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/11/29/AR2005112901636.html I stick with good food and just some simple supplemnts, and I'm a weight lifter for 24 years..
I do One must be educated before putting anything in their body. I research side effects and any known dosage data that is available for the herbal medications, and I never take combination pills. This strategy has served me well and thus far, knock on wood, I am doing well..
I don't take alternative herbal supplements, I take herbal supplements. I did a lot of research before I would buy anything and I have my father-in-law, a TCM MD (and herbalist) to check with also. There are a few sites that check the quality and ingredients of supplements and I check them too.
You just have to make sure the site isn't promoting any particular product(s). There are a bunch of "review" sites that only give good reviews to the parent company's products. Check out doctoryourself.com for one good site..
I take more than 40 vitamins/herbs a day. They keep me alive. I know they work.
I don't buy from cheap places... I can tell the effect from each one. I don't want the government regulating these. They will make you get a prescription and then it will be big business again.
Alternative medicine is keeping me alive and conventional doctors can't. I have to take vitamins since I could hardly eat anything and millions of people are celiac and they would also need vitamins. The FDA is corrupt I don't want them wrecking the use of vitamins.
Vitamins are not dangerous and are like food with no sideeffects. Even salt is dangerous in high amounts and it does not need to be regulated. People taking drugs are missing out on no side effects and a cheaper better way to treat illness.
Garlic thins blood and lowers blood pressure as well as drugs. People who take vitamins read about them first and they would not take them with a drug. You can get books on interactions with drugs.
The biggest problem is that they do the same thing as a drug. The drug industry is big business. Drugs hurt people.
Vitamins/herbs are what is keeping me alive. I don't want the government involved to destroy a good thing.
1 "Only if a supplement kills enough people to get the FDA’s attention, and if the staff of the FDA can find the time and budget, can the FDA then attempt to prove in court that the supplement is unsafe. This costly and lengthy close-the-barn-door-after-the-horses-have-escaped procedure is of course attempted only rarely, and in the most severe cases. The first such case was the banning of ephedra, a supplement suspected in hundreds of deaths.
This ban was soon challenged in court (by a company which sells ephedra), and overturned — on the basis that the DSHEA forbids FDA action even in such an extreme case. Luckily, the ruling against the ephedra ban was itself overturned on appeal. After more than two years of legal battles, ephedra supplements are today illegal.
Despite this eventual victory on this one substance, the DSHEA renders the FDA almost powerless over herbal drugs, even if they are known to be dangerous. (Certainly the FDA has no power at all over herbal drugs whose dangers are simply unknown. )" I obtained this information from an article from eSkeptic, written by Daniel Loxton, titled "The Immortal Lily the Pink: 100th Anniverary of FDA marks a milestone in medicine before which cranks and charlatans ran amok."

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
