It depends entirely on what career path you want to choose. Doctors, Nurses, Lawyers, Engineers, Architects and Accountants for example. Are required to earn a college degree first.
Then pass a Licensure exam to be certified professionals in their field. In fact Doctors and Lawyers have to get a Pre-Med or a Pre-Law college degree beforehand. So they actually go to college twice. In some career paths where experience matters most than a piece of paper (diploma or certification).
Like a Chef, Baker, Butcher, Wood Craftsman (carpenter, furniture, luthier). Its best to get an apprenticeship. You learn more on the job than going to culinary or trade school.
But its a must to work hard and learn from the best people. It could also be difficult to find a Master in the field who would take you in their wings. So if you are really serious and have degree or certification. It would be a great help since they wouldn't have to waste a lot of time training you to do the most basic skills.
In the world of Business. Even Donal Trump agrees that there are 2 Types of people. Those are 1.
Street Smart and 2. Book Smart. You can go to business school and be book smart.
But you have to have the instincts of the streets to succeed. In Trumps reality tv show "The Apprentice" he pits against those 2 groups of people in an ultimate job interview. All candidates have impressive resume of ivy league degree or a profitable business startup from scratch with no formal education. The best candidate who wins gets to be Donald Trump's apprentice.
He'll teach you everything he knows to be successful and perhaps even be the next billionaire. Its a reality of life that College isn't really for everyone. A lot of people go to college who get their degree.
Oftentimes ends up getting no job. Here in the Philippines. Most people who go to college ends up working in a field not related to their field of study.
But as long as you are computer literate and can speak English fluently. You can absolutely get work in a call center and get a decent wage. So all those 4yrs you worked hard and spent in tuition for college is pissed down the drain.
No. Unfortunately it is difficult to move up in a job without a college background (at least an associate's degree. ) You may make way less without college. It used to be that the factory jobs out there offered stability, a steady paycheck, and a definite opportunity for advancement.
I have seen too many factories move to Mexico, forcing families to literally scramble to get back on the bottom rung of yet another ladder.
Great question... I think for some it is overated for others that really want to pursue something and have a reasoning for going it is not. Both of my parents both graduated college however both do not use there diplomas for anything my mom is a stay at home mom and my dad has been selling insurance for 30 years. Thus proving that college probably won't help with a career but only teach you some life long lessons.
If your thinking of attending I would also try to look for a good school... as most are party schools not really something I would be interesting in attending... possibly keep to the ones that do not have dorms on campus. Just a suggestion. I hope it all works out for you!
Mike!
Yes, I do. I went to college and my brothers didn't. We make around the same amount of money.
I don't think it is overrated. I think sometimes a few college courses or a major in an unnecessary area could be useless, but in certain area's and fields it is very meaningful to get an education in the area that you study. That is why a doctor has to do 8 years of college.
I am almost done with my 2 year degree, and if I do stop there it would probably be meaningless, but if I decide to go for my 4 year degree, a lot of opportunities will open up for my career.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
