I made several such moves I was able to pack all of my essentials into the back of a Nissan Sentra and haul them from California to Texas, again from Texas to Miami, and finally from Miami to Washington, D.C. in three moves over three or four years. I seriously thought about getting a U-Haul for that last trip because I had a bed I wanted to keep, but in the end I left it behind. How much stuff do you own?
If you own any bookcases, just leave them behind and buy new ones. They're not worth transporting. Same is true of almost everything large.
If you're really short on cash, you can do without some furniture for a while. Just take the essentials. Also, bear in mind that tax laws and property laws will vary by state.
This won't save you any money, but be aware that you may need to get your car inspected and pay property tax on it that you didn't have to before. Plus getting that first tag is going to be expensive, probably. And of course you're going to have to put down deposits for all your utilities.
Again, this isn't a money saving tip, it's just something to be ready for. Good luck! Sources: My experience .
