From personal experience I can say that in the short term, tooth whitening with compunds like carbamide peroxide can make the teeth more sensitive and more porous. However, as long as you are in good health and taking in the required minerals this is repaired within days / weeks of completing treatment. I have heard that people with very thin enamel can end up with darker looking teeth after such treatment because the thinning / porosity exposes more of the underlying (I presume darker) material.

If staining materials get to your teeth while they are porous, I was told that can create more permanent, deeper discolouration. Other than that, I don't know of any long term NEGATIVE effects (I presume that's what you wanted to know). This method of whitening teeth has been used for long enough now for significant long term problem to have been identified.

Dentists are meant to care for your teeth, and I don't think they would recommend these treatments if there was any chance they would be detrimental.

I am guessing that you meant negative effects from teeth whitening/bleaching... Hydrogen peroxide used in whitening products can cause irritation or bleeding in the mouth and tongue when taken orally, as well as cause abdominal discomfort and diarrhea.

It really depends on what type of whitening system you use and how frequently you use it. Peroxide based home-whitening systems that use a 10% or less peroxide solution are generally safe long-term, as long as you follow the instructions. If you use them more than you should, or more frequently, you can damage the enamel.

Short-term, many people (myself included, when I used Crest Whitestrips) experience higher temperature sensitivity in their teeth and gum irritation, even when using the product as directed. If you go to a dentist and get laser treatment (Expensive) I think that the side-effects are less. However, any treatment that uses bleach can potentially cause some damage to your enamel if used to often.

It depends what method you're using. Yes, there are some ways that can hurt your teeth by wearing down the enamel. However, technology has come far and most doctor's use a safe way.

There are strips such as Crest Whitening Strips that do not have any negative long term effects on your teeth. I recommend going to your local drugstore and picking out a product similar to this. They're at most about $25 and what you do is you use them for about two weeks and you get whiter teeth!

It's really simple Good luck :).

I have a weak enamel on my teeth , and my dentist told me to avoid tooth whiteners he didn't give a reason he just said it would be bad for my teeth.

It will matter how the whiting is done. For example, the medieval method of filling off the enamel quickly destroys the teeth.
