Does anyone know the absolute minimum components needed between an old-style parallel webcam and an LCD monitor parted out from a laptop?

I know nothing about the cameras... well, I found the drivers - so if you want to backwards engineer the software (first link below). As for the video monitor - I think that depends on how old the computer is. Old ones used proprietary interfaces.

Those are difficult to work with. I've one of those and have had no luck. Newer ones use a more standard interface.

But I haven't had a chance to figure out how to use one of these.

It would be complicated. But the bare minimum for parts would probably be a single FPGA chip. I've seen FPGA's doing video out to tv's and laptop LCD screens, they should also be able to easily handle anything that was run by a parallel port.

I'm just starting out with them but I know that it will cost you at $50-75 for a single chip and you will need a JTAG programmer.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
