Does anyone know why baseball bats are being made with maple more now instead of ash?

There are constantly stories in the news about maple bats breaking and splintering. Watching ESPN this weekend they were commenting that most of the recent breaks were maple. Both players and fans have been injured by flying pieces of bat.

My question is why has the change been made to maple in many bats? Is there a valid reason? Asked by BarbieM 43 months ago Similar questions: baseball bats made maple ash Sports & Recreation > Baseball.

Maple is denser wood than ash, so unless it breaks, a maple bat will last longer than one made of ash. Maple bats were introduced some time in the 1990's and slow gained popularity. They really took off a few few years ago when Barry Bonds claimed that *they* were the real key to his success.

Yeah, right. Anyway, the problem with maple bats is that players like bat handles to be as thin as possible so that as much weight as possible is located further up the barrel of the bat, in the sweet spot. The problem is, if you make the handle too thin, the bat is more susceptible to breaking if the batter hits the ball somewhere other than in the sweet spot.

And maple bats have a tendency to break into bigger pieces than ash bats when they do break. According to a recent story in the New York Times, upwards of 60% of MLB players now use maple bats. The league is said to be studying the issue, but it's questionable whether the league can do anything without cooperation from the players' union.

I'm no contract attorney, but the use of maple bats seems to fall under the union's collective bargaining agreement, and as such, it's doubtful that they can be simply banned by order of the commissioner. We'll have to wait and see. Hopefully, it won't take a serious injury to a fan, player, coach or umpire before something is done... Money. Maple trees are more common than ash. Therefore they are cheaper.

Why else does anything get changed? It's always about the money..

Baseball Mogul. Can anyone tell me about it.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
