Does comparing to Math.Min or Math.Max short-circuit?

No, it doesn't short circuit and z() will always be evaluated. If you want the short circuiting behavior you should rewrite as you have done.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
