Cullowhee is a census-designated place (CDP) in Jackson County, North Carolina, United States. Cullowhee is best known for being the home of Western Carolina University (WCU). The population was 3,579 as of the 2000 census.
As of the census of 2000, there were 3,579 people, 716 households, and 272 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 983.1 people per square mile (379.6/km2). There were 823 housing units at an average density of 226.1/sq mi (87.3/km2).
The racial makeup of the CDP was 88.91% White, 7.24% African American, 0.95% Native American, 1.34% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.31% of the population. There were 716 households out of which 17.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 28.1% were married couples living together, 7.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 61.9% were non-families.
