It sure does not have to I have worked for companies large and small, some major corporations and some smaller companies. I currently work for a large corporation and I love it. I am energized by what we do and I have a vibrant group of people surrounding me.
Certainly it is true that there are places that are draining and not enjoyable to be at, but I would not lump all corporations this way. Google is a fun and vibrant place and Apple is a fun and vibrant place yet they are very large corporations. I would certainly not characterize a company as an evil empire just due to its size or scale. It is what you do and the people working that make it a positive or negative place.

It could so could working for yourself. It really depends on the culture of the company, the industry, and the structure of hierarchy. I've worked for three different fashion houses in my early career, (all menswear), and they ran the gamut.
One treated us like gold, figuring that the better we were treated, the more excited we would be about our jobs. It worked. They banned overtime, gave us a lot of leeway to get accomplished what we needed to in the style that we were comfortable with, and kept meetings at an absolute minimum.
The other could have been a company that produced anything; meetings constantly, layers upon layers of management that pummeled the life out of any creative idea, and staff that cared more about how they looked than how the garments looked. It was hellish. I think it is important to research the values and ideals of the company you're thinking of working for and see if they are compatible with yours.

Depends! I think it depends on whether or not the company reflects your personal beliefs and ethics. For example, if you worked for a meat processing plant and you felt that slaughtering animals was cruel, I think then working for that company would damage your sense of self.
I don't think anything can really touch your soul, that is timeless. But I think not working in a field or business that reflects your beliefs will cause you much suffering physically and mentally during your lifetime.
