I never really got to listen to Ernie Harwell announce a game, but I've seen video clips, interviews, most recently the interview with Bob Costas, audio clips and he seemed to be a great man, very humble and likeable with some of the best baseball calls that I have heard. I have a baseball computer game and the play by play is done by Ernie Harwell. The only legendary baseball announcers I have heard regularly are Vin Scully of the Dodgers and more regularly, the late Harry Kalas of the Phillies.
I have been a Philies fan since 1977 and Kalas was a great announcer and always there for the fans during autograph signings and other public appearances. I suppose Harwell was exactly the same way. I have a friend who is a long time Tigers fan and said her son got to have his picture taken with Harwell years ago and she said Harwell was just like a regular guy you could talk to about anything.
He'll be greatly missed but know he's watching down over us and seeing all the games, bringing the best broadcast to Heaven. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiZuVXYa43E.
I grew up listening to Ernie Harwell and as announcers with the Detroit Tigers. I enjoyed listening to Ernie more than any announcer I have ever heard. Every game he would have new stories to tell about the players or his experiences during the game.
He made the game exciting and was genuinely a great person. I know there was Paul Carey and others, but Ernie was a great Hall of Fame announcer and a true American. Did you know that Cliff Dapper was the minor league catcher traded by the Brooklyn Dodgers to the Atlanta Crackers for broadcaster Ernie Harwell in 1948.
It got Ernie to the majors. I grew up listening to Ernie Harwell and George Kell as announcers with the Detroit Tigers. I enjoyed listening to Ernie more than any announcer I have ever heard.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
