Not quite sure what situation you are describing here! Are you talking about something like taking a bearing from ground level on an object at a height above ground, as shown in this diagram? Here, the lengths are related by Pythagoras' Theorem.
Distance² = horizontal distance² + altitude² If you are talking about something else, you need to give us a bit more of a clue :-).
Horizontal distance is only "notional" as one can't dril through a mountain to reach its base at nthe same level as the one from where distance is measured. Altitude is (vertical height) given by"Survey". Distance is the only thing we have, accessible Hence by Pythagoras theorem.
Remember, distance is bigger than the other two. Distance² - altitude² = horizontal distance².
I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
