Legal answeryes, you can take him to court and file suit. If his signature is valid, he will be responsible for paying the debt. If the judge finds in your behalf, he will have a judgment against him.

This will not affect his credit, so if can't pay it, you will never get the money. He has a 10 year cap to pay, and in that time you can have his wages garnished if you can find his employer (granted he has a job and is not working for cash unrecorded).
