From your experience (or for those of you who subscribe to Consumer Reports), which washer/dryer is the best?

I'm looking for something that is, above all, cost- and energy-efficient. Looking cool doesn't hurt, either. ;) Asked by momandreader 60 months ago Similar questions: experience subscribe Consumer Reports washer dryer Home.

A summary compliments of Consumer Reports. First they review the pros/cons of 3 types of washers. Traditional top loader:"Value.

For $500 or less, you can get very good washing and capacity. Many models from many brands. Mature technology with proven reliability.

Use regular detergent. Shortest cycle times. ""Use more energy and water than front-loaders.

Generally noisier. Many are less gentle on clothes. May go off-balance with some loads.

Must choose appropriate water level. Cannot be stacked. "gh-efficiency top-loaders:"Better washing performance and capacity than conventional top-loaders.

Use less water. Gh spin speeds hasten drying. ""Price.

Many cost $1,000 and up. Fewer brands and models. Reliability of various new technologies not yet established.(See Brand repair history.

) Some tangle and wrinkle clothing. Work best with special detergent. Cannot be stacked.

"Front Loaders:"Best washing and largest capacity. Use least water and energy.Gh spin speeds reduce drying time. No risk of loads becoming unbalanced.

Gentler and quieter than many top-loaders. Many are stackable""Price. Many cost $1,000 and up.

Fewer brands and models. Cannot soak laundry. You must stoop to load (If you get one of these invest in the 'risers'-Turk) and empty laundry.

Work best with special detergent."Conclusion:"Front-loaders tend to give you the best of everything, but traditional top-loaders offer the best value"Picks:Top Loaders: Whirlpool Cabrio HE2. ""Don't pay for unnecessary extras. (gher-priced dryers may offer a dozen or so choices, including specialty cycles such as "speed dry" (15 minutes of high heat, for example). These can usually be replicated with standard settings.

Front loaders I love front-loaders, they use less water and I find it is easier to move clothes from the washer to the dryer. They are also very energy efficient, partially due to the lower water usage and partially due to the fact that the way the tub is set up means that more water comes out in the spin cycle which means it takes much less time and energy to dry the clothes (this is where the energy savings really come in). Sources: I asked a former production/design employee of a home appliance manufacturer .

I bought my washer/dryer from Sears 2 years ago. Did extensive research and decided on front-loaders. Front-loaders offer lots of ongoing savings from an cost and energy-efficiency standpoint.

I can't remember the exact calculation, but due to the larger cubic sq. Ft. Of the front loader, the less water they need to clean, and their spinning cycles are faster making you save money on the drytime, the extra cost the front loader had would have taken less than 3 years for me to cover the extra cost vs. a traditional top-loader. If you have a larger family (i'm married with no kids) than the breakeven for you is probably even faster.

I ended up buying the Kenmore HE4 front-loader. It's made by Whirlpool (best quality), but its cheaper than Whirlpool's Duet. Also, if you want to save on money, just get the front-loader only and buy a top-loading dryer.

There really isn't any benefit in buying a front-loading dryer, outside of aesthetics. Below is a useful link with some more info on washer/dryers. Good luck!

1 Front loading washing machines use less water, and in my experience, get clothes cleaner. You do have to use special detergent but I think it costs about the same as regular. My understanding is that the Maytag and Whirlpool brands are both good (Maytag is owned by Whirlpool).
