Going from Albany, NY to Yankee Stadium. Don't want to drive into or within NYC. How do you suggest I go?
I hate driving. I hate city driving even more. I hate driving through a ridiculously huge unfamiliar city the most.
That being said, I'm going to only my second-ever Yankees game next month, and I need to get to the Bronx to see it. How do you suggest I get there? One friend suggested I drive from Albany to the Beacon station, and take the Metro North to Harlem/125th, then take the Subway 4 train from 125th to 161st.Do you have any alternative suggestions?(Please note, any answer that is to the effect of "Why not just drive, it's not that bad!
" will automatically get a 1-star, for intentionally not answering the question I asked. Thanks.) Asked by MrItty 41 months ago Similar questions: Albany NY Yankee Stadium drive NYC suggest Local > United States > New York City - NY.

You can take the Amtrak from Albany into Penn. Station. I looked up the prices and it looks like it's around $120 R/T.
There are various discounts available for seniors, military, disabled, etc you can ask for, if they apply: http://tickets.amtrak.com/itd/amtrak/FareFinder?_tripType=Return&_origin=Albany-Rensselaer%2C+NY+%28ALB%29&_depmonthyear=2008-07&_depday=18&_dephourmin=&_destination=New+York%2C+NY+%28NYP%29&_retmonthyear=2008-07&_retday=18&_rethourmin=&_adults=1&_children=0&_infants=0&_searchBy=schedule&x=29&y=13 Then, when you get to Penn Station, you can take the D train (It'll say Uptown - 205th St) at the 34th St/Herald Square Station. Penn Station is on W33 St, so it's a short one-block walk. Take the D uptown and get off at 161st St - Yankee Stadium.
I don't know if you're familiar with hopstop. Com, but I recommend it to everybody every chance I get. You can find out how to get anywhere in NYC via any form of transportation by just typing in the addresses.
Check it out: http://www.hopstop.com/ I'm with you as far as driving in NYC. I grew up there and didn't get a driver's license until I was 20; didn't own a car until after I left. You don't need one; parking's a nightmare, and public transportation, especially the subway is SO convenient.
Hope this helps and hope you enjoy your trip! .
Your friend gave you good advice... . If you choose not to drive into NYC, then the Metro-North RR is the best way in. Your directions from 125th Street to Yankee Stadium are good.
You have lots of options as to where to catch the Metro-North trains. Hudson line (along the Hudson River) from Poughkeepsie, Beacon, Tarrytown, or several other stops Harlem line (down the center of Westchester County) from Brewster, White Plains, or any number of other stops. I provided you with detailed schedules through links below.
Selection of the stop where you will get onto Metro-North will depend on several factors: Whether you are visiting friend(s) and/or overnighting in a particular location Where you can get convenient, affordable parking. This is key! Time of day--weekends and weekdays differ in availability of trains.
Rush hour can put you in competition for seats and more importantly scarce parking. E.g. , I live on the Harlem line; but, there are few places where you could park in my village for that length of time without an annual parking permit.
I recommend that after you select the stop you think you want, you call the Village Hall for that place and discuss with a person who sounds like they know what they are talking about where you can park at the time of day you will likely be arriving. E.g. , many of the parking spot near my local RR station are taken by around 7-7:30am on a weekday morning. So, if you arrived at 12N, even if you didn’t need an annual permit, you still might not have a parking spot.
Perhaps the best scenario if this is a night game is to stay at some motel a cheap taxi fare away from the local RR station. Then, you can check in and take a $5 cab to/from the station instead of spending at least as much on parking. Of course, if it is a night game, you also need to make sure you know when the last Metro-North train runs, or you will find yourself marooned on 125th Street... I have given you pdf schedules for you to evaluate different options.
Safety is always important when visiting NYC. Your avatar indicates you don't look like you are easy pickins for a mugger. Convert your nice smile into a scowl and noone will want to mess with you.
The subways at game times should pose no problem. There should be huge crowds--standing room only--and don't be a wise guy and wear BoSox shirts and caps...we Askvillers have to look out for each other! If you are traveling with spouse/girlfriend/kids, use your best judgment.
I think that at game times even late at night, you will be 100% fine. Once you are on Metro-North, safety ceases to be an issue.By the way, most NY-ers don't have an issue with the driving...BUT, they will generally not want to drive to the Stadium either because of horrendous traffic jams. So, I think you and your friend are wise.
And, assuming you will be overnighting somewhere in a Marriott Courtyard like place with free parking, my taxi idea to the station should be a good one. Just call in advance to verify when taxis stop running in that town. Your hotel will know or will be able to find out for you.
Good luck with this. Have a nice visit. And, I hope you are rooting for the Yankees!

1 MrI - talked to my son - and he thinks The Metro N route your friend suggested is the best - They can certainly do the Metro North thing, however, that's a lot of pain in the a@@ subway stuff to get back up to Yankee Stadium. Driving as far as Yankee Stadium into the city isn't bad. It's really once you get into Manhattan that its congested.
However parking at Yankee Stadium could be tight. If they are going to do Metro North, that's the way they should go. Otherwise they can just take I-87 all the way down from Albany, it goes right past the stadium, and park there.

2 I'm not sure I understand the "pain in the a$$ subway stuff". From what I can tell, it's a pretty straight shot - take the 4 train northbound from 125th to 161st. Am I missing something?

3 OK, take the train to Beacon station, buy a metro ticket, get on the Metro North, go to the 125th street station, off and go down to street level, walk 1 block east, buy a metro card, go upstairs to the number 4 uptown platform - that will take you out to the stadium. When is the game? It was 102 degrees in NYC today!

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
