How can you tell if a guy that's older than you and you barely know looks at you like he looks at me and smiles but never says anything and when I smile back he gets a big grin and looks away?

He probably likes you, but is kind of embarrassed.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
