I've had four First one was a house cleaning business... No initial investment. Location: Massachusetts/Connecticut Designed posters and placed them in two upscale neighborhoods. Within one month, had lined up enough clients to fill a 40 hour week.
Hard work, an eye for detail, honesty and dependability paid off nicely for around 5 years. Second business, a Realtor, independant contractor. Minimal investment for classes, test, business cards and a few sharp suits.(ladies pastel colors) Location: Connecticut Cold canvasing, passing out cards, doing office time got me started.
Being honest, professional, friendly and a being nut for detail, keeping people informed, seeing the sale or purchase to the end...paid off in great commission checks and repeat business. Expanded into designing homes, buying tracts of open land, designing and developing sub-divisions, genral contracting the building of homes and selling them. I did that business for 22 years.
Third business, a woodworking business Initial investment, around $500.00 for basic tools. With a rickety scroll saw, a small belt sander and a drill press, I opened Clocks and woodcrafts of Connecticut. I found a water bed manufacturer who had nice end cuts of 5/4 pine.
He was paying to have his scraps hauled away, I offered to take them...win/win situation. I started designing and painting clocks in the shape of animal heads. I rented a space on a wall at a craft store in the mall.
People liked my designs and started requesting clocks painted with the face of their personal pets. Then other artists wanted me to cut wood patterns for them. Before long, I was supplying malls in Enfield and Waterbury, CT and E.
Longmeadow, MA...as well as cutting wood patterns for about 20 artists. By this time, I had my lumber delivered by an 18 wheeler. This business lasted 10 years.
I closed it when my husband retired and we moved south. Fourth business, Painting pet portraits. OK, now I was supposed to retire...well... I took art lessons for a few months, found I had a talent for painting pet portraits in pastels.
After I did portraits of all of our eight animals, I started chasing the neighborhood pets with my camera and doing free gift portraits for friends. Word started getting out. I got great press coverage, too.
I did a few local art festivals, passed out flyers at pet events...and orders started coming in. Start-up cost around $3000. Location: Freeport, Florida Start date June 2006.
I'm blessed with a steady flow of orders and lots of referrals from happy clients. This business is only one year old and has unlimited income potential. The only tips I can think to give you...is follow your dream, promote your business and yourself, give the customer the very best product you can at a reasonable price, treat everyone with respect and dignity and above all, be honest. My website is listed on my profile page...take a look and see what's happened in just a year.
I have worked for enough small businesses to know I DON'T want to start one! If you are looking to start your own business because you think it would be great to be a boss and have others do the work, think again. You will be working twice as hard - and twice as long.
The company I work for is very small - 5 people, and that includes the boss. We do biomedical repair - and basically have NO competition (SP? ) , yet it is a struggle to stay afloat - after 13 years in business.
The biggest reason is that being small, we have a big problem getting parts, etc. Because we buy 1 or 2 at a time. Companies today really don't want to mess with a small company - it is just not cost effective. I have worked there for 5 years, and last year was the first year my boss and his wife were able to take a vacation, because he just didn't have the right kind of employees to run the place while he was gone.
It is harder to get lines of credit, etc. When you are small. The best thing we have going for us is a super fast response time, cause we can change horses in mid stream quickly with just a few people. No layers and layers of people to go through to get things done - just a couple of phone calls.
Things are ALWAYS hectic - every day. I come home worn out - and I am just an employee.
If you have the desire, you must have the guts, motivation and passion to succeed.
Small Business Entrepreneurship must be a passion so that one can succeed. It does not need to category specific but one must be ready for the challenges, pitfalls and successes that comes with it. Yes, you have your own boss but you are also responsible for your own income and success.
If you have the desire, you must have the guts, motivation and passion to succeed.
3 I show businesses how to market the people they already serve through relationship marketing. One of the best ways to do this is by sending greeting cards to your current clients and let them know you are thinking of them. Also, let them know how they can help you.
But writing cards takes a long time.. until now. Try sending a couple of cards for free and tell me how you like it. Www.
