My union hall is in North Bend so I visit there occasionally. Coos Bay/North Bend has three major industries: fishing, logging, and shipping. Of the coastal towns, it is a more depressed area, still, which is not necessarily a bad thing (read: the housing market isn't booming too badly) There is some tourism, but it is not a tourist mecca. I glanced at your profile, to see what concerns might concern you most, and the first will be the weather.

You will love the weather, or you will hate it. We exaggerate how much rain we get, here on the coast, but the fact is, winters here are cold, wet, and dreary. Typically, so is spring.

In summer, things are better, but you will have to adjust to 75 degrees being considered warm, 80 considered hot, and 85 being unbearable. You mentioned a career in healthcare, and that is a universal need, so there shouldn't be too much toruble finding work. I don't know what your specialty is, so I can't say what the exact market will be for you.

As for the culture, you will find a healthy redneck population, but rural Oregonians are actually more culturally diverse than many places. I think the relative lack of population density allows us all to learn to get along better with our neighbors than in the big cities. Come spend a week or two in the area and get to know the place, and that will help more than anyone's advice.

We don't live far away We are a little further inland, but visit. Hope you like fog and chilly weather a good part of the time! Other than that it's great....of course, unless a tsunami hits.... The Oregon coast is magnificent.

Personally, I prefer more sun and warmth, which we get in Grants Pass. But we love visiting the ocean and I love walking in the wet sand, especially with the grandkids, who stop to find all kinds of interesting rocks and shell bits! .

It's been awhile since I've been there but it's not that far North of me. I'm wondering why you are relocating there except if you are retiring? It's right on the coast with fresh sea breezes/walks along the beach/looking for clams and seashells/its a wonderful place if you love the beach.

The winters can have bad storms coming in off the ocean with strong winds. The fog can be thick a lot of the time. Its the kind of community where you must "join in".

There's plenty of clubs and I think there's a casino fairly close. If you need medical attention you would have to travel to a larger city, but basically, I think there's everything there that one would need for a comfortable life. Sources: personal knowledge .

Beautiful and wild.....and wet. Coastal (sort of) Oregon is one of the most beautiful places in the world...In my opinion. My mother’s family is from Oregon:Portland, Tillamook, Beaverton ... (via Minnesota)....I have often traveled by car up and down the coast , and loved it.

There will be no casual swimming in the Bay or the rivers in this area (cold ,cold water), but the surrounding countryside is incredibly beautiful, and the hiking is awesome... (if you like that sort of thing)...it’s definitely not for everyone. My uncles and cousins live like it’s normal to be rained on...they fish in the rain, for example, and have a great time. It rains a lot, that’s why it’s so green.....But the summers are incredible.

Hope this helps a little. Lived there done that. Very depressing place except when the sun comes out. Which is not often.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
