Has anyone had experience with desktops with quad processors and very, very large memory?

64-Bit Operating System! Since one of your requirements is "very, very large memory," you need to make sure you get the 64-bit version of Vista as your operating system. There is a 64-bit version of WinXP, but it was kind of a red-headed stepchild and never was supported well.

Now that just about every processor you could put into a comput is 64-bit capable, and the memory limit for a 32-bit WinXP/Vista is 4GB, you'll need a 64-bit OS to go to something like 8GB or 16GB. Since entertainment and gaming aren't high on your list, you should have NO trouble with 64-bit drivers. I've got a dual-core 64-Bit Vista Ultimate home-theatre PC and it works flawlessly.

You'll need a 64bit OS to use anything more than 3.25GB of memory 32bit OS's are limited to 3.25GB of ram because that's the largest number you can get to with 32 bits. Also, get a nice dedicated video card if you are using Vista because Vista offloads 80% of the graphical user interface to the video card to process (Aero), which allows the processor to concentrate on more important processes (like photo or video editing). For heavy duty editing I would recommend a video card with at least 512MB..

Try alienware Alienware computers are built for gaming, but if you're talking about that much power, then you need a gaming platform to handle what you're doing. You should consider how much power you actually need, for the most part a dual core processor with 2-4 gb's of ram should handle any pictures and video you throw at it. If the pictures and video are coming from a source outside the hard drive such as CD, Internet etc, then the processing speed may not be your issue.

Alienware sells liquid cooled computers, which are much quieter and more efficient that fan cooled computers. If you are considering quad processors (which I'm not even sure is possible yet) then you will need much more cooling than the standard computer can provide these days. I'd suggest a gaming platform is the most powerful computer you'll find in the PC market, but that a standard dual processor computer with 4 gb of ram should handle almost anything you throw at it in terms of photos and videos.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
