I did not have an opinion of Rick Pitino prior to this incident, but I can say that my view of him after reading about this story is not horribly negative. He is obviously not a good husband, and trying to buy your way out of your problems is never a good idea, but in my opinion, lying about being raped and using sex and a blackmail mechanism is much worse. Karen Sypher claimed to be pregnant 2 weeks after their encounter and received $3000.
This was in 2003. Years later, she goes after him for more money, and when he refuses to give it, cries rape, charges which seem to have little to no corroborating evidence. False claims of rape do incredible damage to women who actually are raped and attempt to press charges.
They increase skepticism about the reality of rape, and further victimize women (and men) who actually are raped. So if anything, while I agree Pitino's actions were horrible, and that he could have avoided the whole thing simply by being a better man, I think Sypher is the true bad guy here.
I live in Louisville, and the people here love him. Everybody always wears Louisville shirts, and all people were talking about at the time of the NCAA tournament was Louisville basketball. Louisville had the highest t.
V ratings for the NCAA tournament. I even seen multiple guys wearing shirts with Rick Pitino's face on it. In Louisville for sports all we have is Louisville college sports, and the Louisville Bats which is the minor league Cinncinatti Reds team.
I look at this situation the same way about what happened to Marv Albert. I think everybody will lose a little respect for him, but I think people will treat him as a victim, and focus on Louisville Men's basketball, and try to forget about this bad thing Pitino did 6 years ago.
I don't feel differently about him as a coach, but as a man, I have lost a lot of respect for this affair. Has he been a victim of circumstance? Maybe so, if Sypher and her husand really did try to extort money from Pitino.
BUT, he put himself in that situation where something like that is possible. In general, I don't feel sorry for the man.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
