I listen to them frequently, as I love having something to distract me while I'm working out, or cleaning house, or - like you - on long car rides. I (of course, as a huge Harry Potter fan) love Jim Dale's readings of the Harry Potter books - he does so many distinctive voices while reading that you get truly absorbed into the story. He's actually won some awards for his Potter narrations.
I have also discovered a company called Fullcast Audio, which assigns each book character to its own voice actor, and that really does bring the book to life. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the Circle of Magic Quartet by Tamora Pierce with them, but they have also recorded quite a few other books you may also be interested in. Additionally, the tchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy narrated by Douglas Adams - the author himself - makes for a great "read."
I've had that one accompany me on long roadtrips before, and having the author read his own jokes really brings out his... er... "distinctive" sense of humor. ;) As for your other questions - I don't think any particular genre does better or worse for audiobooks. It's the content that really decides whether you like a book or not, and that doesn't change if you're listening or if you're reading.
If you have a book you're interested in reading, try it on audiobook - it's so fun to be able to "read" and do other things at the same time! :).
I don't recommend to listening to audio tapes while driving as the "voice" of the author could be so soothing it might make you sleepy. Instead I recommend you listen to Comedian cd's on long drives, for example one of Jerry Seinfeld's, ''I'm telling you for the Last Time'' - funny guy. That will make the time just fly by on a long drive guaranteed, depending of course if you like Seindfeld.
Any of your favorite comedians will do, drive safe and stay awake.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
