Have you ever seen a movie that inspired you so much with it's location that you wanted to--or did--go to the location?

I know that Under A Tuscan Moon definitely made me want to visit that area! What movie has made you antsy to visit the places it mentions, and why? Do you think, if you haven't gone, that you will some day get there?

On many occasions! For many years I lived just outside Hollywood, and was a part of the "The "Hollywood Scene"--even working in animated cartoons for a while. Seeking-out the filming sites of movies I love was, and is, a hobby of mine.An old, "low budget" silent-movie producer once said, "A rock is a rock, and a tree is a tree; go shoot it in Griffith Park" to one of his location scouts when asked where they should film something, and that adage has been followed in Hollywood ever since!

The first movie I remember specifically seeking-out the locations where it was filmed was the luridly-named--but truly excellent--1956 movie called "The Invasion of the Body Snatchers". I and my similarly-interested friend actually went to no-longer-existent studio, Allied Artists, in the 1960s to see if we could find-out where the locations used were, and was told by an "old-timer" where they could be found--which were mostly near, or in, Griffith Park! The other location used was in a city called Sierra Madre--about 20 miles away from Hollywood, near Pasadena.

The most interesting thing about our finding these locations was that one of them--which is an abandoned rock quarry in Griffith park known as Bronson Caves (there were three caves left over after the quarry ceased operation)--has probably been seen in more films and television shows than any other movie site on Earth! It has been used in westerns as a gold mine, etc.; in horror movies as the cave where the monsters hung out, etc. ; and on and on. It has been used both in high-budget and low-budget films.

If I wanted to take the time, I could make a list of all the movies and television shows that Bronson Caves has been in, but it would go on for hundreds--if not thousands--of titles. I have also been to many, many other near-to-Hollywood locations used in many films, both in the city and in the country. The greater Los Angeles / Hollywood area can double for almost anything, due to its not only being a city, but near the ocean, mountains, and desert!

For example, there is an area called Vasquez Rocks--on the northern, desert edge of Los Angeles--having a series of unusual rock formations which jut-out of the ground at odd angles, which, like Bronson Caves, has also been used in many films, such as "Charge of the Light Brigade" with Errol Flynn, and "Planet of the Apes" with Charlton Heston. Parts of "The Charge of the Light Brigade" set was still standing when I last visited there. I have literally been to hundreds of movie sites--mostly in California--even some near where I now live (200 miles north of Los Angeles)!

For example, there is an area near where I am now called Guadalupe Dunes, which is a series of large sand dunes along the beach. Buried deep beneath them is the remains of a huge set made for the original, silent version of the "The Ten Commandments". Also nearby is the seaside city of Cayucos, where the ever-popular, super-low-budget film "The Monster of Piedras Blancas" was shot.

Movie-site seeking has always been a hobby of mine--even when I lived in Seattle, where "Sleepless in Seattle" and "The Fabulous Baker Boys" were filmed (along with a number of other movies). I haven't made it out of the states yet, but I could spend a lifetime seeking-out all the sites of all the movies I like that were filmed in the U.S. alone, without ever leaving the country! I don't need to go to "foreign lands".

My favorite movies, like the film noir movies of the 1940s, and the SF and horror films of the 1950s, were almost all U.S. based. I'd love to go to someplace like Tahiti, or France, of course--but not because a movie was filmed there! Sources: Personal experience.

Out of Africa I had wanted to go before seeing this movie, but the cinematography in this film was so incredibly beautiful, and it romanticized Africa as such a surreal and pastoral land it fueled by desire to one day this continent, and Kenya in particular. The connection between the people and land, our role as custodians, and the narrator's love affair with Robert Redford, all set against this dramatic landscape stayed in my dreams long after the closing credits rolled. And no, I still have not been, but will some day go!

In reverse order. I'm not into gazillion dollar special effects movies. So i'd had little interest in The Lord of The Rings trilogy.

I do adventure travel vacations. Through a company www. Activenewzealand.

Booked a month in New Zealand hiking. Biking, canyoneering, bungee jumping, rafting, kayaking. Knowing the trilogy was filmed there, made me watch it.

Ended up hiking right by the mountain ,that was Mt.Doom. Did canyoneering in the area where most forest scenes were filmed. Beautiful country, fabulous peoples.

Yes............ HOUSE OF SAND Brazilian movie called House of Sand (2005) and could be seen on HBO. It impressed me a lot especially that the whole movie is in a deserted are. Just sand all over.It is very philosophical and must be seen.

Won many awards. Puzzled about it I researched to see where it had been filmed. Unfortunately being limited with my walking capacity virtual tours are the only ones I can take.

In a National Park in Brazil called Lençóis Maranhenses ( Sheets of Maranhão). This area is not a desert because ot contains beautiful rivers and 1,000 lakes. Check it out: http://www.americasol.net/brasil/lencois_maranhenses/index_english.html "Brazilian Springs" It is even hard to believe but, besides beaches, forests, mountain ridges and the Pantanal swamplands, Brazil still keeps another beautiful and rare scenery for its dwellers and tourists: a desert with scattered fresh water ponds.

This region is part of the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park which was established in 1981 aiming to protect and study this ecological system. It has become, however, a major tourist attraction. The Park holds a total area of 1,550sq.km.

(i.e. 382,850 acres). There is dune after dune, all carved by the high wind caused by the coming and going of the tides.

Notwithstanding its desert-like appearence, Lençóis Maranhenses records an annual rainfall of 1600mm (i.e. 62.9 inches). All that water comes down during the well marked rainy season, from January to June.

From July to December, it is time for the dry period, when dozens of ponds drain completely or partially. The miracle in that story lies in the fact that when the ponds fill up again, life comes back. Fishes, crustaceans and turtles reappear as if they had never left the place.

For a visit, the best time of the year stretches from May to October, when the natural pools are formed. The beauty of the place is not only in the ponds. The dunes, which sometimes reach up to 20mts or 65 feet, consist of a very white sand.

The landscape is in permanent change, and thus no one has the privilege to see the same sight twice. Besides its "desert", Lençóis has also its mangroves, rivers (where the local, specially adapted boats named "voadeiras" navigate), beaches and, of course, its "natives". The natives are fishermen who raise their little flocks of cattle to help themselves get by during the dry season, giving the landscape a desert-like/rural flavour.

The Park is located on the coast in the State of Maranhão, between Barreirinhas and Primeira Cruz counties. To get there the visitor may choose travelling by bus or by car for a 10 hour trip, or with a charter flight from São Luís (the capital city of that State), towards Barreirinhas. The touristic spot has little structure, but Barreirinhas has hotels, hostels, restaurants and handicrafts shops.

At the mouth of the Preguiças river (which flows accross the Lençóis area) lies the small village of Caburé, that also has guesthouses and restaurants. In the villages it is possible to appreciate the typical food of the region, to go birdwatching late in the afternoon and to take another boat to continue the trip: a trip with a lot of sand, beautiful sceneries, wind against the face, great food and sympathetic people..

The Last of the Mohicans It took me hours to figure out where it was. I knew it had to be on the east coast and it was too far south for new england. I was pleasantly pleased to find that it was North Carolina.

I had been near there, but never suspected further on could be so beautiful. I never cease to be amazed at the beauty of east Tennessee. Its easy to see why the colonists volunteered to fight for it."Piano" has made me want to see New Zealand.

Other "secret" places are northern Arkansas and east Texas.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
