Have you ever taken a creative writing course on-line? Good experience? Bad experience?

Yes. I took an online creative writing course through Johns Hopkins CTY in 10th grade. It was a really great experience for me.

The course involved writing an essay or story following a particular prompt every other week (one was due every 2 weeks), and my teacher would send feedback within a couple days of submission. Her feedback always went into very great detail of ways in which I could improve my writing. One required submission was actually an edited version of a previous story, so the course didn't even ignore the importance of multiple drafts and the general editing process!

I'm not sure if my teacher actually recognized my name each time she read my work (I'm not sure how many students she had online), but I really did get the feeling that she was right there with me...Her advice was so sound and so kind that I never had the sense that I was communicating with a computer. I have to say that this sense that the teacher cares about your work and really hopes for your best is stringent for the greatest level of success in these courses. I took 3 other online courses (Macro/Microeconomics and Statistics) through Apex this year, and I'll admit that I had a lot of trouble being motivated to turn the work in on time and even learn the material.

And why? Because the way this course was set up, all of the learning came by watching cartoony videos (imagine trying to learn Economics from cartoons), and there was minimal interaction with the teachers. In fact, all of the interaction I had with them was really just a grade report after I turned in my homework, telling me my score and occasionally showing where I had made mistakes.

Apex doesn't grade holistically. If you don't word something properly, you lose all credit. If they say "Name some times when the Fed will increase the money supply", and you don't list all 5 they were looking for - only 4 - they'll take off credit. So, needless to say, I was very aggravated much of the time seeing my grade report, meaning that my only interaction with the teachers was negative.

The whole experience was stressful and aggravating. So, taking online courses can either be wonderful (even better than real classes in certain cases), or they can be dreadful, far too stressful, and not at all worthwhile. If you're searching for an online creative writing course, here are my suggestions: -Aim for a course at a well-known university because these are normally much stronger (I know Stanford and Northwestern have online courses, as well as many other major universities) -You probably aren't looking for a graded course, but in any online course you take, you will want holistic feedback.

You don't want a writing instructor who simply makes certain that you followed grammatical principles and had four sentences in every paragraph! -Try to select one where there is some interaction with the teacher. Interaction with fellow students can be fun, but a lot of the time it can also feel "forced" if it's in an online environment.

It's really the interaction with the instructor that makes all of the difference...in the end what will determine if you enjoy or can't stand the class. -Also, make sure you have time for the course and that it fits into your schedule. Believe it or not, these online courses can take several hours each week.

The CTY course I took was great because I had plenty of time to work hard on my submissions. You really want this experience to stay fun and not feel like a lot of extra weight on you. Good luck!

Yes, I did and had a pretty good experience. I did an online-based writing classes a couple years back in Undergrad. Basically, it was a double-edged sword for me.It really depends on what you are looking for (and probably depends on the specific class, my experience may very well differ a lot from your experience).

My experience was that, it was great in terms of "ease" and being able to get a good grade without killing myself. It was, however, bad in terms of what I feel I got out of it. If you are looking from the learning standpoint and how much you can take from the class, I do not recommend online at all.

If you are looking at it from the prospect of passing with a nice grade, then I do recommend it. At least from my experience, that is how it was. The feedback was lacking, the constructive criticism was lacking, but I left with an A without much effort.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
