Help, I have gnats! I can't figure out where they are coming from and they are driving me crazy. They are sporadically around the house; not in one centralized location.

I have scrubbed the trash can and recycling bins, behind the refrigerator, around the dog bowls. Plus I've done all my normal cleaning. I've thrown away plants that I thought were the culprits.

. Check your kitchen pantry, check the bags of flour, etc.Do you have fruit or veggies sitting around (especially organic)? Do you live in the city or country?

Are there trees near your home and do you keep your windows open? Check your dog food (yep, I've had gnats appear in the pet food before - yuck! ) Another place, but not very likely, would be any vents, do you have air vents in your bathroom, above your shower, for example?

It would also be a good idea to launder/dry clean your curtains/bedding/etc.I know this is a pain, but if it is a real problem, the culprit could be that you had a one time infestation from an outside source (food, plants, etc) and the gnats have then continued to breed, laying eggs in your house, hatching out, laying more eggs. Gnats breed in damp, soggy or wet areas. Check to see if your refrigerator has a drain pan, check under sinks, under or around your water heater, showers and bath areas too. It is possible that you have standing water outside your home and they enter with you.

Seal all electrical outlets on external walls, all windows and doors, bathroom vents. Check to see if the vents for your plumbing have insect blocking screens. If you have an attic, check to see if the roof vent is protected too.

Any hole large enough for a gnat needs to be closed. This will also save some on your energy bills.

Check water sources. See if you have any water leakage anywhere in the house such as pipes or drains. A few years ago that happened to me and it drove me nuts.It seemed to be the most gnats I saw were in the kitchen but I did find a few in other parts of the house.

I was looking under for my sink for a cleaning product and spotted a small leak coming from a hose connected to my dishwasher. I told my husband, he changed the hose to stop the small drip and all the little gnats were gone. They are attracted to water and water sources.
