Young women in the 1920s were intent on enjoying themselves. The name 'flapper' was used to describe these fun loving young women who danced the wild crazy dances that became popular in this era, smoked and drank publically, wore makeup (which had gone out of fashion in the 19th century) and bobbed their hair and shortened their skirts. Flappers were disdainful of the 'new women' of the previous generation, with their interest in education, careers, and social reform.
Zelda Fitzgerald probably summed up the spirit of the age when she wrote: "i think a woman gets more happiness out of being gay, light hearted, unconventional, mistress of her own fate than out of a career that calls for hard work, intellectual pessimism and loneliness." The 'new Women' in their turn were dismayed by the frivolity of the younger generation. Jane Addams said girls "extraordinary emphasis on sex" wS disquieting, given the contribution the 'educated unmarried woman' had made in the past fifty years.
In 'cheaper by the Dozen' frank and Ernestine Gilbreth describe their father's reaction when their older sister Anne wants to wear the new up to date fashions to be more popular at school: "popular!" dad roared "Popular. That's the magic word, isn't it? Nobody cares about being smart, or clever, or sweet, or even attractive.
No sir. They want to be skinny nd flat chested and populR. They'd sell their soul and body to be popular, and if you ask me a lot of them do," interest in careers for women declined, Dr Lilian Walsh, A longtime practitoner, commented sadly that women doctors hD become s fashionable as a 'horse and buggy.' Most single women worked for a living, but most expected to give up work when they married.
Henry Ford said "i pay our women well so they can dress nicely and get married.

A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
