Michael Vick, Dog Fighting and Public Opinion The famous or should I say infamous, professional football player Michael Vick is an NFL player again. At one time, he was the highest paid football player in the country. However, in 2007 he was convicted of conspiracy and running a dogfighting ring.
He served 18 months in prison and was released recently from Federal custody. Along with his sentence, the NFL indefinitely suspended him. Well, indefinitely did not last very long.
This July, the NFL conditionally lifted his suspension. Moreover, a few days ago the Philadelphia Eagles signed the quarterback to a one-year contract with an option for a second year. The Eagles are looking for a super bowl win that has been so close yet so far for them.
They are thinking Vick might tip the scales in their favor. I have two pet peeves, hurting children and animals. What Vick was convicted of doing was disgusting.
He hung under performing dogs from trees, electrocuted them, held them under water, and also killed them. Oh, and of course the foundation of what he did was that he put dogs in a ring and had them fight other dogs. I have absolutely no respect for a man who does these things to animals. It is one thing for a man to enter combat arenas on their own volition.
However, to force living creatures to do it for you is cowardice. I am happy he was convicted and sent to prison for as long as he was. S sentence was an appropriate one we do not see often enough.
Too often, those with money skate, and by skate I mean they get away with an insignificant punishment. That did not occur in this case and kudos to the prosecutor and judge. Now, he is back in the NFL, mainstreamed into society and people have mixed feelings.
Many are conflicted about if he should he be barred for life from his high profile livelihood or not. I say no he should not. He paid his debt to society.
He also has said words of contrition and regret. Personally, I hoped he would have made public service announcements against dogfighting, which could have changed young minds about the cruel practice. Yet, with all my negative feelings about Vicks actions, I still believe he should be given another chance at participating in his profession.
People should be given the chance to go on and work after leaving prison. They have served their time and it is time for them to go forth and be different, hopefully. Without being given these chances, millions of people would be at a distinct disadvantage and more of a burden on society.
However, personally, I choose not to watch any games he participates in. It certainly is my right and in this situation, it is my choice. I may forgive in the larger sense but I cannot forget so quickly.

Every one deserves a second chance in life it it appears that the NFL has provided one to Michael. Every one deserves a second chance in life it it appears that the NFL has provided one to Michael “dog fighting” Vick. The former Atlanta Falcon QB has signed with the Philadelphia Eagles for a reported two year contract, the first year of the deal is only for a reported $1.6 million.
Most people wish they are provided such second chances. A long with that contract comes the distraction and most likely backlash and protests from PETA for Vick’s past involvement with dog fighting and cruelty to animal. However, more so than that comes the acceptance of the Philly fans, who as everyone knows are tough to win over.
Let’s hope for Vick’s sake he does a better job than Santa Claus. Then there are the away games where in every city there will be protests and fans in the stands holding up Milk Bone dog biscuit boxes with Vick’s likeness on it. However, the real issue is how will most fans look at Vick and his actions after he has served prison time for dog fighting?
The other more pressing question as it pertains to the football operations of the Eagles is why take a flyer on Vick when you already have McNabb and just drafted back up Kevin Kolb. Are we really supposed to believe that Vick is competing for a starting QB role? Hardly.
What about back up? Many of suspected that Vick will be used in a “wildcat” type offense. You mean to tell me that Philly is willing to go through all the headaches with Vick and the baggage he carries for 5 plays a game from a QB who has not played in two years?
Strange at best. It is hard to believe that Vick will be a QB in Philly, a change of position will be in his future. Sources: http://searchwarp.com/swa533739-Michael-Vick-Dog-Fighting-And-Public-Opinion.htm .
Football Player Says Michael Vick's Dog Fighting is Nobody's Business Prosecutors and investigators met for two hours today to review evidence in the alleged Mike Vick dog-fighting case in Virginia. Two N-F-L players backing the Falcons quarterback are the Redskins Clinton Portis and Chris Samuels, who recently spoke to a Virginia T-V station. Portis-"I don't know if he was fighting dogs or not, but it was his property. It was his dogs.
If that's what he wants to do, do it. What people do behind closed doors."Reporter-"That's a felony. I mean it's a crime.
"Portis-"Can't be too bad of a crime."Reporter-"Police in Surry County are investigating Vick, his property in Surry, and about 10 other suspects in an alleged dog fighting ring. Investigators found about 70 pit bulls there. Most of them covered in bite marks.
They also found blood-soaked carpet, and a lot of equipment commonly used to train fighting dogs. "Portis-"You want to hunt down Michael Vick over fighting some dogs. I think people should mind their own business."Reporter-"It's been 3 week and commonwealth's attorney Gerald Poindexter has not yet charged anyone, including Michael Vick.
Portis and Samuels say the media has been unfair to Vick. "Samuels-"You can't accuse this man of something and go ahead and throw the book at him right now. He's got to be convicted first.
I don't think that's fair. "Reporter-"Police tell ten on your side, they have solid evidence, showing Vick is heavily involved in dog fighting."Portis-"You take somebody doing positive in the community. You take a positive role model and put him behind bars for no reason.
Over a dog fight?" Sources: http://www.wdef.com/node/5296 .

2 I'd like to think that those of us that were outraged at his crimes could rise above such things. It would be a better punishment if he were required to work in an animal shelter for a year and a day, and see what that kind of suffering is all about.

" "Have you seen the National Geographic TV report on the dogs that used to belong to Michael Vick?(see details.).
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
