How are turtles and tortoises different?

Typically, they are called tortoises if they are land turtles, and turtles if they are aquatic. Really it depends on where people are from as to what they call them. Americans tend to use the above nomenclature, whereas Australians consider them tortoise if they have webbed feet and turtles if they have flippers.
