As much as people might like to twist facts, redefine the terms of the left-right political spectrum, Jonah Goldberg's ideas of "Liberal Fascism" are all pure BS. The closest the left-leaning politicians in this country come to fascism is by pandering far too much to a special interest group. HOWEVER, that special interest group is unionized labor making them closer to socialism, a leftwing movement.
This is VERY different from the extreme RIGHTwing movement of fascism. When Dick Cheney and Karl Rove hand-selected a puppet to occupy the Presidency, unprecedented cronyism was rampant, with more direct corporate influence over our governmental processes than ever before. In a sense, our democratic republic was bypassed, corporate shills were placed into the highest levels of government, and, those corporate interests set the stage to rule by proxy.
Corporatism, in which the state rules a nation's major industries (one facet of a fascist system) was put in place. Only, it was the major industries (oil, chemical manufacturing giants, etc) ruling the government, pushing through policies which benefitted them over the wellbeing of the American people. But, why does their voting base tolerate such things?
Because the voting base was selected to be the most loyal, unquestioning, devoted team players possible: the conservative religious. No group is less questioning. And, so long as the GOP can deliver rhetoric that follows along with Biblical guidelines, they'll be able to appeal to the deeply religious while pushing through their own agenda without a second glance.
Which brings me to another point of fascism... An emphasis on a strong national identity. Tying religion to the ideal of the "proper Christian American citizen," the religious aspects of the GOP replace the ethnic tendencies of European-style fascism. The religious righties can be considered the exclusive club, a de facto ethnicity, claiming to be more "American" than any other.
They accuse their critics and detractors of "hating America," when in fact, they're betraying the American ideals of tolerance and acceptance that were afforded to their newly emigrated ancestors. To further maintain this position among their voting base is to offer a designed and controlled source of information, trusted above all others. To the righties, good "American" team-players accept its information as fact, without question.
The propaganda is full of examples of true Orwellian double-speak. Damning liberal critics of the TEA Party as "racists" because they rightly point at the N-word signs carried by protestors. Then, broadening that definition to call ALL liberals racists, deflecting attention from the inherent racism in their own ranks.
It's truly amazing. To drive that point home, we have ultra-conservative, party-line right-wingers accusing left-leaning liberals of supporting fascism. It's an expertly played scam.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
