How can I hem my jeans?

Sigh* Sure. I can do it. Bring 'em here.... Seriously, though. It's too far away for me to do it--but I can help.

FIrst, do you have access to a sewing machine? Because that is much the best way. If you don’t have one, ask around.

You’ll (in general) have better luck locating one with women who are somewhat older (I’m pushing 50). As I see by your profile, you're in college. If you go to the theatre department or to a community theatre and ask there, someone could probably help you.

Yoou're looking for the Costume Shop. Just DON't be pushy if they are in the middle of a production and hard at it.At that point, they're REALLY busy, and they really DON't have time. But in general, someone who's working in the Costume Shop will be happy to take pity on you, especially if you ask nicely and heap a little humility on your own head.

Heaven only knows I patched plenty of people's jeans, sewed on buttons, sewed up seams, lengthened, whortened, took in and let out for people a whole lot when I was doing costume work, and I STILL do alterations for my nextdoor neighbor. It also helps to proffer a minor bribe, or to offer payment. In general, they'll turn you down, or only take a couple of bucks to do it. Basically, with jeans, you cut them off at 1.5 inches LONGER than you want them to be, then turn them in, and in again, until you have that roughly 5/8ths of an inch folded hem that hides the raw edge, pinned into place.

Orange thread USED to be traditional, but you should use whatever the orignal hemline was sewn in. Denim's tough stuff, though, especially when you're going over the seams, and the machine should have a size 14 or 16 needle. There are iron-on hemming products available.

DON'T BOTHER with them. They won't hold up.
