Unfortunately, despite the many Old Wives' Tales and advice from women who swear something worked for them, it is not possible to induce your own labor. Even medical inductions don't always work if both baby and mom's body aren't ready yet. I am mom to 4 who were all born past their due dates by 9 days, 11 day, 5 days, and 7 days.
Especially with my first 2, I was very motivated to do what I could to get labor kick started. I walked for miles, had a lot of sex, ate spicy food, did squats, tried nipple stimulation, walked up and down stairs, drove down bumpy back roads, and scrubbed floors on my hands and knees. What I really wanted was for my babies to be born, but what I got was tired, achy legs, a very happy husband, terrible heart burn, contractions that started than stopped, a dirty car, and clean floors.
I, of course, didn't stay pregnant forever, but nothing I did made my labors start any sooner. It doesn't hurt to give most of the Old Wives' Tales a try (I, personally skipped the castor oil as that sounded just too nasty plus the information was contradictory if it was harmful to the baby - I didn't want to take any risks with my baby's health), but don't get your hopes up too high. By my 3rd baby I resigned myself to the fact that the baby was in charge and my body was going along with whatever plan she had in mind concerning entering the world.

Only a couple show any promise, and the jury is still out on those. Acupuncture might help bring on labor, but it's too soon to say. In parts of Asia, it has been used for centuries to jump-start labor.
The study included 56 women who were 39.5 to 41 weeks pregnant. (Forty weeks is full term.) Half of the women got three acupuncture sessions, while the other half did not. Seventy percent of the women who got acupuncture went into labor on their own, compared to 50% who received standard care.
The women who got acupuncture were also less likely to deliver by cesarean section -- 39% compared to 17%. "We had almost a 50% reduction in the C-section rate," says researcher Terry Harper, MD.
You should not try to induce labor on your own. Labor will come when the baby is ready. Trying something drastic can be dangerous to both you and the baby.
