How did Emancipation Proclamation free the slaves?

None. It only claimed to free slaves in those areas in open rebellion against the federal government, which would leave Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, Missouri, and West Virginia out as they were the Union border states. That is the slave states that remained in the north for various reasons.

Which only leaves the states that seceded and formed the Confederacy. Ah, but there's the problem right there, they formed the Confederacy. A separate nation that was fighting it's own war for independence.

That makes things a little complicated. Why? Because during a war for independence the nation or territory breaking away from the parent nation is by law under the authority of the parent nation until it can win the war and thus it must obey any laws of the parent nation.

But at the same time it has separated from the parent nation and formed it's own government, thus meaning it does not have to obey the laws of the parent nation. Those laws can then be used by the parent nation to look as if it's army is a police force, enforcing the laws the separatist nation does not obey. This can also act as a way to keep foregin powers out of the war if the laws hit a particular moral ground that those powers do not wish to involve themselves with.

In otherwords what Lincoln was doing was to pass something he knew full well the South did not have to obey as they had declared themselves a separate nation so as to make their actions illegal. And in doing so he pretty much ensured the European nations, who were already having a problem deciding to join the South due to the issue of slavery, were quite unlikely to ever join as they would now see it as the Union was trying to abolosish slavery. Those areas already under Union occupation in the Confederacy were not affected by it.

And it was only up to the Union commanders in charge of an area once it came under Union occupation to enforce the Emancipation. Not all did.

It only freed slaves that were in the states of the Confederacy.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
