Madam Walker discovered her partial baldness while working as a laundress. The lye in the soap she was using, while an effective cleaner, was bad for the skin and hair. She expieramented with different shampoos and chemicals to make it grow back and eventually mass produced hair care products designed especially for black women such as Miracle Hair Grower and Vegetable Shampoo.
