The begining of the Tudor dynasty began with Henry VII defeating his cousin Richard III in a battle in 1485. He killed Richard and was named King because he was a descendant of Edward III who was King a little more than 100 years before Henry VII was a descendant of John of Gaunt (the son of Edward) and his mistress turned wife Katherine Swynford. There were some people that said that he should not be King because the children of John of Gaunt and Katherine Swynford were barred from the throne To make sure that his children had a better claim to the throne he married his cousin Elizabeth of York who was the daughter of Edward IV and niece of Richard III.
