Need a bit more information, but here is what you should look for You need to establish if you are connection to an EXCHANGE server or to a POP3 Server. If this is corporate, it's probably Exchange. IF A POP Server: there is a setting, under the Accounts tab, Email options, that says "Leave Mail on Server".
It is either ON or OFF. On your laptop, you want that to be set to ON -- that is, you want to leave your mail on the server. This means that you will always have to do permanent deletions on the machine at work, but at least it won't wipe things out accidentally.
IF AN EXCHNAGE SERVER - On the laptop, go to your Mail Account Settings (possibly in your control panel; it depends on how old your machine is and what version of Windows. On one of the first screens, you will be asked "How do you get your mail - Exchange / POP3 / IMAP? " Make sure that Exchange is correctlyt chosen.
On the line underneath, there will be a question: "Use Cached Exchange Mode? " My guess is that this set to OFF. You want to turn it on.
The effect of this is that you will make a complete duplicate of your mailbox from work, on your machine at home. Whenever you receive/delete/change/file any email, the information will synch up with the other computer (the next time it connects). So getting mail will not delete anything anywhere unless you tell it to..
