How do I get the musty smell out of my single pipe steam heating system?

I have an 80-year-old house with a 35-year-old boiler. When the heat comes on first thing in the morning, the air displaced from the system has a musty smell. What's the best way to get rid of the odor?

Drain the system? Clean each radiator individually?(Yikes!). I have been told that the smell is caused by oil used in the assembly of the system.

It could just be dust build up Generally this time of year is when the radiators smell the worst. Usually it's caused by dust build-up over the past year and as it heats up, gives off that odor. Since it's a sealed system, I would doubt very much that you're smelling anything within the pipes themselves.

What I used to do in the Fall was to clean the radiator real good. I would take the cover off and dust it down and maybe even blow it out with compressed air (wear a dust mask). Just try one room and see if it helps, if so, then you have a little cleaning to do..

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
