How do I get the spell checker to work in outlook express? I use open office not microsoft office?

I use open office not microsoft office. I perfer not to switch away from outlook express, I would just like a spell checker function that works.It is currently grayed out / inactivated. I belive it normally becomes active if you install MS office, but I used open office and it is not active in outlook express with open office installed.
