Many Dell AC adapters use the Dallas (Maxim) one wire protocol to tell the computer their specifications. You could use the same one wire EPROM that Dell uses, or program a microcontroller to serve the same purpose. Most universal AC adapters do not support the one wire protocol.
Many of the clones of Dell adapters do have the one wire chip and will work just like a genuine Dell adapter.
Many Dell models have recently updated the BIOSes allowing nonOEM adapters to charge the battery. You don't get all the annoying wranings either. I think they got hit with a lawsuit.
I know some models slightly newer than yours were affected, probably worth a try.
