You can't vista won't remember your settings every time you disconnect then reconnect it thinks it is a different monitor. If it was Nvidia or ATI their drivers and software would save the setting for you. Microsoft has fix this in windows 7.

If you haven't already, visit Dell's support site and download and install the latest available video drivers for the 640m. That might fix the problem if this happens to be a bug in Intel's driver.
